The Greek word for "chosen" is eklegomai. It means: to pick out, choose or select.
In scripture it is used for the selection of something or someone extremely special, with favor or privilege.
Election, our word of choice today, is taken from this word. When we say election, we mean selected for a purpose.
This matter of election is for the believer.
Think of it this way:
By God's grace we have been saved. It's nothing we did. All we did was accept what Jesus Christ has done. Once we've accepted that, we are then chosen or selected as sons. In other words, we are then "adopted". As a believer we should be thrilled that we have been selected. This is a realization we come to, only after being adopted.
The fact that before time God knew those of us who would one day be adopted as sons, has to do with the fact that He is omniscient. This is something we as humans can't fully understand while here on earth. The enemy would love to have us over-complicate it and cause doubt or division. Instead, we should realize that somethings won't be fully revealed to us until we are united with Him above.
In some things, including this topic of election, it is good to look at it “simply” and to believe it by faith. It is by the grace of God, and the work of the Lord Jesus, that the Father has chosen us to be His sons. And we should rejoice.
